چکیده

We report on a series of experiments in which a Hele-Shaw cell containing aqueous solutions of NH4Cl was translated at prescribed rates through a steady temperature gradient. The salt formed the primary solid phase of a mushy layer as the solution solidified, with the salt-depleted residual fluid driving buoyancy-driven convection and the development of chimneys in the mushy layer. Depending on the operating conditions, several morphological transitions occurred. A regime diagram is presented quantifying these transitions as a function of freezing rate and the initial concentration of the solution. In general, for a given concentration, increasing the freezing rate caused the steady-state system to change from a convecting mushy layer with chimneys to a non-convecting mushy layer below a relatively quiescent liquid, and then to a much thinner mushy layer separated from the liquid by a region of active secondary nucleation. At higher initial concentrations the second of these states did not occur. At lower concentrations, but still above the eutectic, the mushy layer disappeared. A simple mathematical model of the system is developed which compares well with the experimental measurements of the intermediate, non-convecting state and serves as a benchmark against which to understand some of the effects of convection. Movies are available with the online version of the paper.

The Transient Growth of Ammonium Chloride Dendrites

We report measurements of the initial growth and subsequent transient response of dendritic crystals of ammonium chloride grown from supersaturated aqueous solution. Starting from a small, nearly spherical seed held in unstable equilibrium, we lower the temperature to initiate growth. The growth speed and tip radius approach the same steady state values independent of initial seed size. We then...

Chloride-sensitive fluorescent indicators.

Three fluorescent halide-sensitive quinolinium dyes have been produced by the reaction of the 6-methylquinoline heterocyclic nitrogen base with methyl bromide, methyl iodide, and 3-bromo-1-propanol. The quaternary salts, unlike the precursor molecule, are readily water soluble and the fluorescence intensity of these salts is reduced in the presence of aqueous chloride, bromide, and iodide ions,...

Contact efflorescence as a pathway for crystallization of atmospherically relevant particles.

Inadequate knowledge of the phase state of atmospheric particles represents a source of uncertainty in global climate and air quality models. Hygroscopic aqueous inorganic particles are often assumed to remain liquid throughout their atmospheric lifetime or only (re)crystallize at low relative humidity (RH) due to the kinetic limitations of efflorescence (salt crystal nucleation and growth from...

An experimental study of shear-enhanced convection in a mushy layer

The influence of an external shear flow on the evolution of a solidifying array of dendritic crystals, termed a mushy layer, is investigated through controlled cooling of an aqueous ammonium chloride solution in a laboratory flume. The controlled cooling produces a mushy layer that grows at a constant rate from the base of the flume over which a laminar shear flow is applied. We find a critical...

A chemical probe technique for the determination of reactive halogen species in aqueous solution: Part 2 – chloride solutions and mixed bromide/chloride solutions

Although reactive halogen species (X*=X, •X−2 , X2 and HOX, where X=Br, Cl, or I) are important environmental oxidants, relatively little is known about their kinetics in condensed phases such as seawater and sea-salt particles. Here we describe a new technique to determine reactive chlorine and bromine species in aqueous solutions by using allyl alcohol (CH2=CHCH2OH) as a chemical probe. This ...
